four-pronged approach
Through our approach to developing exceptional educational leaders that are racially diverse and culturally competent, we will not only improve academic and social outcomes for students, but we will affect policy and practice to create sustainable change. We foster conditions that increase retention among public school educators of color, encourage advocacy, incite collaboration among schools and their community, to ultimately instill a sense of confidence between parents, teachers and administrators, to create equitable outcomes for historically marginalized students.
We take a multi-pronged approach to build an effective administrator pipeline that is more reflective of the public-school communities we serve across California.
DLI works collaboratively with districts and charter schools/networks to provide several critical services such as workshops, evaluation of current RDEI philosophies and practices, proposing solutions, performing assessments and reflections, and continued support during and post engagement including a community and network through the Principal of Color Network.
ASPIRING PRINCIPAL OF COLOR FELLOWSHIP COHORT
In partnership with Loyola Marymount University, the DLI fellowship launched in the Fall of 2021. It provides a 16-month experience for aspiring, rising and current school leaders of color, focused on Cultural Responsive School Leadership, racial diversity, equity and inclusion. Aligned with California administrative credentialing requirements, fellows dive deeply into: the role a leader’s own cultural identity plays in their leadership (self-awareness), and how systemic and structural racism and white supremacy (power and privilege) has impacted them and their perspective as educators, educational leaders, and the students and families they serve.
To remove the financial burden associated with the cost of being an educator, we offer a low-cost option for program participants.
DLI collaborates with the Charting the Course to Equity Coalition to develop and implement a strategic plan to address racial diversity among public school administrators. Leveraging the collective strength of these organizations, we create the policy and advocacy conditions to compel politicians and school systems to act.
PRINCIPAL OF COLOR NETWORK
The Principal of Color Network convenes several times a year to share best practices, celebrate successes, challenge each other, network, provide opportunities for promotion, provide safe spaces for leaders of color to engage in, and advocate for systems that are responsive to the needs of the most marginalized students.
